Cobbers get new football uniforms for upcoming season

MOORHEAD – Concordia will have a new look next fall on the football field. The Cobbers are getting new home and away jerseys and pants for next season.

“They’re sharp,” said Cobbers head coach Terry Horan. “They are going to be nice.”

Concordia has worn its previous uniforms for the past six seasons, Horan said. The team will continue to wear the same gold helmets it has used since the 2008 season.

Horan said the new uniforms are patterned after Auburn, using a Concordia color scheme.

The home jerseys will remain maroon and the away jerseys white like last season, but with different styling. Horan added the new jerseys have a tighter fit, too.

The new pants are white with striping down both sides. The old game pants were Vegas gold with no striping.

Concordia is changing from a Russell brand to a Nike brand uniform.

“It’s a big deal to our kids,” Horan said. “The Nike brand is very popular and also in recruiting. We’ve shown them off through the whole recruiting year. Nowadays, it just seems like it’s a big part of recruiting. Looking sharp and having the right look. Kids love that swoosh.”

Below are the new uniforms.

Dragons: Football odds and ends the week after signing day

Steve Laqua, left, thinks this recruiting class fits the program mold

Minnesota State Moorhead is slated to have 29 freshmen join its football program after last week’s national signing day. The Dragons announced 27 players, which included four walk-ons, last Wednesday. They added two more commitments the day after. Those two additions are both from St. Paul Central, offensive lineman Tre’Von Bennett and linebacker Jerad Gardner.

“At the end of the day, I like that they fit our mold,” Dragons head coach Steve Laqua said of the class.

Laqua said the average GPA of the incoming players is a 3.10.

The state-by-state breakdown goes like this: Minnesota (16), North Dakota (7), South Dakota (2), California (2), Wisconsin (1) and Nebraska (1).

Here are some more football odds and ends:

  • Freshman defensive back Stefan Webber, a former Fargo Shanley standout, has ended his football career due to concussions, said Laqua. “It’s big,” Laqua said. “You are losing a guy who was positioned to be No. 1 at corner or safety.”
  • Laqua said senior linebacker Tyler Hewson is still rehabbing and is expected to return next fall. “He’s progressing nicely,” Laqua said. Laqua added it is unlikely Hewson will participate in contact drills for spring ball. Hewson, from West Fargo, suffered a knee injury last August.
  • Laqua said senior-to-be Tyler Brody will move from safety to outside linebacker.
  • The Dragons will have three quarterbacks on the roster for spring ball. Myles Montplaisir, a former Shanley standout, and Ryan Toelle (Sisseton, S.D.) both redshirted last fall. Laqua said MSUM also added Brock Wieber, a transfer from Northern State. Wieber will have to sit out next season because he transferred within the same conference. Wieber played high school football for Wyndmere-Lidgerwood. The Dragons will add a fourth quarterback in the fall when incoming freshman Jacob Hodge (Kasson, Minn.) is slated to join to team.

A closer look at the Dragons football recruiting class

Minnesota State Moorhead head coach Steve Laqua said as much as half of MSUM’s 27-player recruiting class could earn playing time next fall.

Defensive back, wide receiver and offensive line are three areas that first-year players will have the best chance to compete for playing time.

Shea DeJong, a 5-foot-7, 175-pound safety from Sioux Falls Roosevelt, is a recruit who could see the field next fall.  Laqua likes how physical DeJong plays. Below is a DeJong highlight package.

Korey Jacobson, Nico Caramella, Jaylen Raye and Brandon Nelson are other defensive back recruits who could see the field sooner than later.

Jacob Antolak, Zach Stemen and Bennen Bierman are offensive line prospects with a chance to push for early playing time.
